Stephan El Shaarawy ItalyMonaco forward Stephan El Shaarawy has revealed that he was very happy to score a goal for Italy in their 3-1 Euro 2016 qualifier win over Azerbaijan on Saturday.

The Azzurri were able to secure themselves a definite spot in next year’s tournament with their victory and the 22-year-old, who scored his country’s second goal of the match, admits that he’s now focused on helping Italy win in their next game at home against Norway on Tuesday as they look to win the group.

El Shaarawy spoke to Rai Sport following the positive result in Azerbaijan about Italy’s great performance and commented on his hopes to please the home fans in Rome on Tuesday.

“We had entered the field determined and focused,” said the Italian, who hadn’t netted an international goal since November 2012 until scoring in the 43rd minute.

“It was a great performance and a great showing of character, heart and pride. Personally, I’m very happy for my goal as I hadn’t scored Italy in a long time.

“We play at home and we hope that there will be a lot of fans there. It will be a difficult game but we’ll try our hardest to win and stay on top of the group.”
