The FIFA ethics committee have recommended that president Sepp Blatter should be handed a 90-day suspension.

No decision will be confirmed until it receives ratification from the adjudicatory chamber of the committee though should the suspension be confirmed, it would effectively end Blatter’s reign as president of football’s world governing body.

Speaking to The Guardianclose friend of Blatter – Klaus Stöhlker – said  the 79-year-old was the only man to lead FIFA.

“What we know is that president Blatter was told he could be suspended for 90 days,” he began.

“The ethics committee has not taken any key decisions, they are waiting for further investigations. There is no guilt impugned,” Stöhlker added.

““He [Blatter] is quiet, he is reluctant, he is fully prepared to take his responsibilities.

“He is the only one who can lead Fifa.

“The picture for 90 days is not pleasant.”

Blatter had promised to step down from his position in February 2016, as such, the proposed suspension until January would all but end his reign sooner rather than later.
