Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic, formerly of Inter, has claimed that Roberto Mancini was a significant factor in his decision to leave the club.

Kovacic moved to Rafael Benitez’s Real Madrid in the summer for a fee reported to be approximately €32 million.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper Marca, Kovacic mixed his praise of Real Madrid with thoughts on why he felt compelled to leave Serie A.

“Leaving Italy was the best decision,” the Croatia international began.

“I left Serie A for the best team in the world.”

“Mancini did not want me at Inter and the best option was to switch clubs.”

Kovacic had made eighty appearances for the Nerazzurri before his departure, almost exclusively in a midfield role.

In the interview, Kovacic claimed that Mancini believed he was better suited for a different role this season, a change that the 21-year-old did not take kindly to.

“[Mancini] had in mind to change my position on the field, the way I play, but this was not right.

“I am a midfielder and I have to play that role.”
