After earning 24 points to top Group H in the qualification round for the Euros, Chellini has insisted that it is necessary for this developing side to focus primarily on the future rather than the past and that they do have the potential to possibly win the tournament in 2016.

“We have formed a good group and I think this Italy squad has everything it takes to be great,” said the 31-year old to RaiSport.

“Obviously, victory depends on many factors, but I think we can do well.”

The Juventus player also noted the influence of former boss Cesare Prandelli, of whom coached the Azzurri between 2010- and 2014, admitting that they are keen not to replicate the mistakes made during his reign.

“We must remain focused,” Chiellini added. “The first two years with Prandelli were also very positive and then, unfortunately mistakes were made, and the results in our 2014 World Cup were not up to standard.

“The World Cup continues to be a major regret for us, but I do not think it is appropriate to focus on the past, rather we need to move forward and remain positive if we want to get good results in the future.”

Chiellini also took a moment to comment on the rumours that former Bianconeri teammate Andrea Pirlo could return to Serie A with Inter, as well as discussing his recent omission from the Italian national team.

“I really cannot see Andrea at Inter,” Chiellini concluded. “I believe that Andrea will return to the National team eventually, although Conte is right, and like others, we’re going to have to get use to playing without him sooner or later.”
