Conte - italy v PortugalItaly coach Antonio Conte says that it is performances in major tournaments that will ultimately decide his fate.

The Azzurri waltzed through Euro 2016 qualifying with an unbeaten record, winning seven of their 10 games, but coach Conte is being cautious over talk regarding a contract renewal, pointing to evidence in the past.

“I think I’ve done very well with the role of coach, and I am happy with my work,” the former Juventus boss told the press before his side’s friendly against Romania.

“I didn’t expect to make so much progress with the boys in such a short time,” he continued.

“It is something that gratifies me a lot.”

When asked directly about his future, Conte pointed towards the experiences of former coach Cesare Prandelli, who also had an unbeaten qualification record for the 2014 World Cup.

“My future will depend on what we achieve,” he said.

“I remember very well what happened with Prandelli, he renewed his contract but then because of the results [in the World Cup] he had to resign.”

Italy are currently ranked 13th in the official world rankings, one ahead of opponents Romania.
