El-Shaarawy-ItalyStephan El Shaarawy has lamented his side’s missed opportunities after Italy were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw in their friendly match against Romania on Tuesday evening.

After conceding an early goal from Bogdan Stancu, the Azzurri managed to overcome the deficit in Bologna with a quickfire double in the second-half courtesy of Claudio Marchisio and Manolo Gabbiadini before an error from Salvatore Sirigu in goal saw Florin Andone score a late equaliser.

Nevertheless, the 23-year-old made known his frustrations at the result, insisting Conte’s men could easily have scored a third goal.

“The second half was better than the first, we created many scoring opportunities and it’s a shame we didn’t hold on for the victory. You have to win in these situations,” El Shaarawy told Rai Sport.

“We could’ve scored a third goal, we didn’t manage it and Romania equalised. I am angry at the result, especially as I could’ve scored a goal.

“We stepped on to the field convinced of what we had to do, but Romania scored with their first chance. We reacted well, but were unable to take home the win.

“The role I prefer is to play wide left. I have been more consistent in my performances for Monaco too, but I do need to be more consistent in front of goal.”
