Empoli coach Marco Giampaolo admitted he was concerned ahead of his side’s fixture with Lazio, a game they turned out to win 1-0.

Lorenzo Tonelli gave the hosts the lead after five minutes from a corner, his 13th goal for the club since making his debut in 2010.

“We struggled, but showed great spirit against a strong Lazio team who have great players,” Giampaolo told the press after the match.

“The result is of great value to us, it felt deserved as we fought hard for it and I wouldn’t say we stole anything from Lazio.”

On-loan Roma goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski was pivotal to their victory, making a number of vital saves to deny the visitors.

“Lazio worked very hard to break us down, but we could absorb their pressure and we played to our strengths,” added Giampaolo.

“It was a game I was concerned about, as Lazio are a very strong side. We’re hoping to finish the year positively.

“We have injuries and suspensions to deal with, but I believe we have the resources.”
