Florenzi among finalists for FIFA goal of the year

florenziRoma’s Alessandro Florenzi has been named on the three-man shortlist for FIFA’s 2015 Puskas Award.

The Italian will go up against Barcelona star Lionel Messi and Brazilian striker Wendell Lira for the best goal of the calendar year, after being nominated for his long-range strike against Barcelona in the Champions league earlier in the season.

The final three nominees were announced via FIFA’s official website, with the eventual winner  set to be announced at the FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala in Zurich at the start of 2016.

Florenzi earned plaudits all across the world following his fantastic strike from the halfway line in a 1-1 draw at home to Barcelona. The Roman midfielder picked up the ball within his own half before beating his man and driving a thunderous strike over the head of German international Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, much to the delight of the Stadio Olimpico.

Roma captain Francesco Totti even applauded his team-mate after the game, hailing the strike as one of the best in Champions League history.

Messi, meanwhile, grabbed the headlines as he displayed lightning quick feet to score a classy solo-goal against Spanish side Athletic Club, breaking past the Basque side’s defence to drill the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

The third finalist, Wendell Lira, earned his spot amongst the nomaniees for a fantastic overhead kick whilst at Brazilian side Goianesia.
