Coach Gian Piero Gasperini has insisted that Genoa must prioritise avoiding relegation before they think of advancing up the Serie A table.
Gasperini’s side lost 2-1 to Serie A newcomers Carpi but they had played with 10 men for the majority of the game because of Leonardo Pavoletti’s controversial sending-off.
“The team did well on the field,” Gasperini told the press.
“But, I do not know what happened with Pavoletti.
“It is a severe episode that added to the others, I’m not just talking about cards.”
“We have to achieve a bit of stability here and think about the fact that in this league, our thoughts must go towards objectives.
“First, let us put ourselves into a position of safety.
“I have access to the players who are here to relaunch their careers. We must stop thinking that we are a foot above the others.
“Carpi had players who were running more than ours.
“We must be humble again.”
