Inter president Erick Thohir has revealed that Biscione boss Roberto Mancini will be the one who ultimately decides if the team should pursue NYCFC midfielder Andrea Pirlo in January.

The Nerazzurri are expected to further strengthen their squad this winter as they continue to battle for first place, with Mancini’s men currently sitting in second place just one point behind league leaders Fiorentina, and some reports suggest that one of their top targets is the former Juventus man, who left Italy over the summer to play in New York.

Thohir spoke to Guerin Sportivo about the possibility of Pirlo returning to Inter in January and admitted that the Milan side will definitely be looking to sign some new players this winter.

“Pirlo? He’s a great player, but you’d have to ask him and Mancini about his possible future here,” said the Inter chief.

“There were certainly be new players coming in January, because I want a competitive team. We have to earn a place in the Champions League.”

Pirlo previously played for the Nerazzurri from 1998 until 2001 before joining rivals AC Milan.
