Gianluigi Buffon Juventus Champions League finalJuventus stalwart Gianluigi Buffon has heaped praise on former Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas by labelling him as the strongest Spanish goalkeeper in the world.

The 37-year-old revealed that Casillas was the best Spanish goalkeeper he had laid eyes on during his career. In addition, he mentioned the likes of Peter Schmeichel and Walter Zenga as some of the goalkeepers he considered idols during his youth.

“The best Spanish goalkeeper? In the years of my career, I say without a doubt that it is Casillas,” Buffon told Marca.

“From my youth, I say [Peter] Schmeichel, [Walter] Zenga, [Gianluca] Pagliuca and [Andoni] Zubizareta.”

The former Parma player also commended the current crop of goalkeepers such as Arsenal’s Petr Cech, Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer and current Napoli number one Pepe Reina.

“During this era, I think Neuer and Cech are doing really well,” he added.

“The best goalkeeper with his feet though is Pepe Reina.”
