Mario Balotelli AC MilanLiverpool and AC Milan have been in contact with one another as the loanee from the Merseyside club Mario Balotelli is set to undergo surgery, and the Italian could be out for an additional two months.

Following a disastrous year in the Premier League where he scored just four times in 28 appearances, Balotelli showed promising signs of his former self after returning to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on a season-long loan, before a groin injury sidelined him back in September.

Initially it was believed Balotelli was simply suffering from fatigue and expected a quick return, but later reports confirmed he sustained a sports hernia, and after several weeks of non-surgical treatment, the Gazzetta dello Sport has reported that the 25-year old is expected to undergo surgery in hope of fixing his ongoing issues.

The medical staff at Milan and Liverpool have been working together, sending Balotelli for a consultation with Dr Per Holmich in Denmark earlier this week, and his surgery could be held as soon as next week.

Having previously reported that Balotelli would be fit in time for Milan’s clash with Juventus at the end of the month, it is now believed that he may not be available until mid-January, which will come as a blow to Rossoneri coach Sinisa Mihajlovic, who is likely to continue relying on Luiz Adriano and Carlos Bacca during the Italian’s recovery.
