Schalke exile Kevin-Prince Boateng looks set to make a sensational return to AC Milan when the January transfer window opens.

The Ghanaian was suspended by the German club in May after showing a lack of commitment, but has since been training with the Rossoneri first team.

Now it seems a definitive decision has been made according to Tuttomercatoweb, with Milan making direct contact with the player’s agent to begin discussions over terms of a contract.

Long-term injuries to Jeremy Menez and Mario Balotelli have provoked a reaction from the Milan hierarchy, with Sinisa Mihajlovic reportedly keen on the former Portsmouth midfielder.

Boateng scored 17 goals in 100 appearances for Milan, before returning to the country of his birth in 2013, signing with Schalke for a fee exceeding €10m.

The 28 year-old has already appeared in friendlies for the Rossoneri, impressing Mihajlovic with his work-rate and distribution.

A deal with Milan could see Boateng take a pay-cut to help facilitate the move, who is believed to be earning €2.5m a season.

Milan fans quickly accepted Boateng when he arrived in 2010, but grew disenchanted with his change of positioning.

Numerous injuries and a lack of effort also made him a shadow of the industrious midfielder they’d signed in 2010.
