Fiorentina recorded a comfortable 2-0 win over Sampdoria at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris to extend their stay at the summit of Serie A for another week, at least.

Josip Ilicic converted an early penalty to give La Viola the lead against a tame Samp side before the in-form Nikola Kalinic doubled Paulo Sousa’s side’s lead in the second half.

The Firenze side leapfrogged Inter to regain their position at the top of the table, having lost their spot hours earlier as Roberto Mancini’s men claimed a rather predictable 1-0 win at Torino, thanks to a first-half Geoffrey Kondogbia goal.

The weekend’s biggest game unquestionably came at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome as Roma emerged victorious from the season’s first Derby della Capitale against Lazio. The Giallorossi took the lead as Edin Dzeko scored what was only his second of the season, with Gervinho continuing his hot streak in the second half to seal the points for Rudi Garcia’s side.

Napoli also remain hot on the heels of Fiorentina courtesy of a sole Gonzalo Higuain strike, which ensured 1-0 defeat of Udinese.

Massimiliano Allegri’s under-fire Juventus ran out victors against Empoli, despite having fallen behind to a Massimo Maccarone strike. The veteran’s effort was cancelled out by Mario Mandzukic before Patrice Evra and Paulo Dybala secured a 3-1 win and the points for the Old Lady.

The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza saw AC Milan and Atalanta play out a stalemate, in which the visitors will feel aggrieved to have left with a solitary point as they dominated the match from start to finish. A turned down second-half penalty appeal for a foul on Alejandro Gomez will no doubt be playing on the mind’s of La Dea’s supporters over the international break.

This season’s surprise package, Sassuolo, earned their sixth win of the campaign as a Nicola Sansone goal meant they defeated minnows Carpi at the Mapei Stadium with the sides playing their first ever derby in the top tier of Italian football.

Carpi’s fellow Serie A newcomers Frosinone came close to another upset against Genoa at the Stadio Matusa only to have Serge Gakpe cancel out Modibo Diakite’s strike and Leonardo Blanchard’s unorthodox goal. Leonardo Pavoletti had initially given the Grifone the lead.

Elsewhere at the bottom of the table, Roberto Donadoni climbed to 16th in the table as they made it two wins from two in charge of Bologna with a 2-0 win, meaning Hellas Verona‘s wait for a 2015-16 win would have to persist as the Gialloblu remain 19th. Emanuele Giaccherini’s upturn in form continued as he scored a well-taken half-volley before Godfred Donsah added a second against his former club.

Verona’s city rivals Chievo made the trip to Palermo and returned empty handed, with Alberto Gilardino stealing the points for the Rosanero, only to pick up a yellow card for his celebration. The win sees Palermo sit in 12th place on 14 points from their opening 12 matches.
