Adriano Galliani AC MilanAC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has revealed that he tried to appoint both Antonio Conte and Maurizio Sarri before eventually settling for ex-Sampdoria boss Sinisa Mihajlovic.

Whilst praising the former Empoli coach for his recent work with Napoli, as well as discussing Italy coach Conte’s selection policy upon Milan striker Mario Balotelli, he admitted that he did try to court the two Italian tacticians in the summer.

“Sarri is a good coach,” Galliani told Mediaset Premium. “He was among some of the candidates for our bench but we do not regret appointing Mihajlovic.

“Conte was another who we tried to appoint and he knows the player [Balotelli] very well. It will be him who decides if he takes him to the Euros.”

Galliani also reiterated Milan’s obligation to qualify for a European competition at the end of this campaign, stating also that there will be incoming players during the January transfer window, although does not believe that their current squad is worse off than others within Serie A.

“Players will arrive in the transfer market,” Galliani concluded. “This squad was constructed to get us into Europe and we must achieve that.

“We are not going wrong just with the tactics in the matches, it is everything to do with the player’s application.

“However, the levels of quality within our squad is in proportion to that of Italian football and other teams.”

Following their 1-1 draw against Hellas Verona, the Rossoneri now sit seventh in the Serie A league standings with a total of 25 points.
