Louis Gibberd-Thomas analyses whether the possible return of Paris Saint-Germain striker Ezequiel Lavezzi will boost Napoli’s chances of securing the Serie A title.

Higuain NapoliIf the results achieved under coach Maurizio Sarri had been leading to anything, it was this – beating Inter to go top of Serie A.

A heroic performance from the Azzurri (embodied in no small part by goalkeeper Pepe Reina) has put them in the driving seat for the first time this season. However, despite the undoubted jubilation, the realist in all of us still needs to rear its ugly head.

The Serie A title is far from won. For many, the real challenge begins when Napoli are in the throws of the Europa League. With opposition in the tournament somewhat underwhelming, the Partneopei could afford to cruise in the competition. Although it has to some degree had an affect on the fitness of the team, it is likely to worsen as the competition intensifies.

Without a Coppa Italia fixture until later in the month, newly-promoted Bologna are next to face Napoli. The Rossoblu have enjoyed a change in fortunes under coach Roberto Donadoni, so Sarri should be on high alert. Roma are the toughest side on the Napoli fixture list leading up to Christmas, with all supporters hoping for a positive end to the year.

One piece of news that’s caught the attention of fans has been the potential return of Ezequiel Lavezzi. The Argentinian gave an interview recently to La Gazzetta dello Sport, expressing his desire to return to Italy. He made no attempt to disguise his affection for the city of Naples, claiming it was a ‘special’ city to him, but nevertheless was open to joining other Serie A clubs.

El Pocho is remembered fondly in Naples, who spent half a decade in the light blue jersey of the Azzurri. Arriving at the same time as present captain Marek Hamsik, the pair would represent the return of the mighty Napoli to Serie A. Lavezzi in particular had an immediate impact, scoring in important matches, he even bagging a hat-trick in a Coppa Italia tie against Pisa.

For supporters the arrival of Lavezzi was a blessing. Recovering from their recent bankruptcy the club needed an inspirational figure on the field, one that could become a world class player. The arrival of Edinson Cavani completed the trio and Napoli went from strength to strength, but Lavezzi was always adored by fans even as he neared his move to Ligue 1.

So what would a return to playing at the Stadio San Paolo mean for Lavezzi? It would certainly boost the title chances for the Azzurri, who would provide pleasant company for his compatriot Gonzalo Higuain. The pair have enjoyed an excellent understanding at international level, to unite them at Napoli could be sensational. Very much depends on the price Paris Saint-Germain name for their knight in shining armour, but Aurelio De Laurentiis will be well aware of the intent such a signing would signify.
