Torino comfortably beat Cesena 4-1 in their Coppa Italia fourth round tie at the Stadio Olimpico di Torino on Tuesday night, gaining their qualification to the quarter-finals of the competition.

The Granata were the only side in it for the majority of the first hour of the match as Alessandro Gazzi, Emiliano Moretti and Maxi Lopez put them three up before the Cavallucci Marini got one back through Emmanuel Cascione, only for Marco Benassi to get a fourth for the home side late on.

Their attacking intent started early on and they were ahead with three minutes on the clock following a corner, as Cesena keeper Federico Agliardi made an excellent double save but the ball was drilled back in by Gazzi and Agliardi couldn’t do anything about it finding its way to the back of the net.

Ten minutes later and their lead was doubled by Emiliano Moretti, when he brought to an end a scramble in the penalty area from a cross by toe-poking the ball past the keeper.

Josef Martinez was so close to making it three when his effort got blocked off the line by his own teammate in Maxi Lopez after 20 minutes when he pounced on a parried shot.

That third goal came after the break, though, and it was Lopez who directed the ball the right way this time as he ran behind the opposing defence and picked up on a through ball before slotting the ball past Agliardi.

With about 25 minutes to go, despite them being dominated for the majority of the match, Cesena got a goal back through a shot from Emmanuel Cascione a few yards in front of goal.

With less that ten minutes to go, though, Marco Benassi made it four for the hosts with a well-placed shot from outside the area.

The victory for Torino means that the next round of the Coppa Italia for them is a tasty Derby della Mole against Juventus.
