Massimo Ambrosini believes that AC Milan will have to sign a world class midfielder if they are to challenge for top honours once more.

The former Rossoneri captain feels that the current crop of midfielders at the club can’t be compared to those of the past as there is a huge gulf that separates them in terms of abilities.

“Milan’s midfield? If you keep making comparisons with players that were there before, those who are there now will be outclassed,” the 38-year-old told Radio Deejay.

“If I were Galliani, I would take a quality midfielder, (Ilkay) Gundogan for me is a player who who adds quality and can change every team.” he added.

Ambrosini also touched on the Diavolo’s upcoming opponents Fiorentina, who he believes will face a challenge without several key players.

“(Paulo) Sousa wants to win, but Fiorentina must improve come Sunday,”

“They will miss both Milan Badelj and Gonzalo Rodriguez which will be an important test for the Viola.”
