Sarri NapoliNapoli coach Maurizio Sarri has escaped a long-term suspension after making homophobic comments to Inter coach Roberto Mancini during the Coppa Italia quarter-final between the two.

It was the Nerazzurri tactician Mancini who was sent to the stands after complaining over the amount of injury time during Tuesday’s game but now Sarri has been punished for calling his opposite number a ‘faggot’.

The FIGC have handed the former Empoli coach a two-match touchline ban for the Coppa Italia along with a €20,000 fine.

“Napoli has no doubt in the repentance expressed repeatedly by Sarri for these comments,” read an official Partenopei statement responding to the ban.

“This proves once again his personal qualities and an ability for self-criticism.

“It is hoped that the public and media will now return to focussing on purely sporting matters.”

It is not yet known which games Sarri will spend in the stands as Napoli were knocked out of this year’s Coppa by the Biscione on Tuesday, who will now play Juventus.
