AC Milan defeated Genoa 2-1 at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Sunday afternoon in Serie A, as they chase a Champions League qualification berth.

Goals from Carlos Bacca and Keisuke Honda saw the Rossoneri comfortably past the Grifone, who could only net late on through Alessio Cerci.

Milan made a quick start at the San Siro, Honda forcing Mattia Perin to claw the ball out of the top corner with a long-range effort and Bacca netted from the resulting corner.

After the Japan international’s initial delivery was returned to him several Rossoneri players stood offside, but full-back Mattia De Sciglio arrived from deep to control the ball and send over the cross that the Colombian volleyed home.

However, the hosts struggled to take advantage of their early lead, and eventually allowed Genoa to grow in confidence towards the end of the first-half and start to threaten.

With the second period following a similar pattern as the first, Milan eventually made it two.

Honda continuing an influential performance with a speculative effort from distance that flew past Perin in the Grifone goal.

It was nearly three on 73 minutes, but Riccardo Montolivo’s low drive from the edge of the box cannoned off the post.

The visitors did make the last two minutes of injury-time interesting, when ex-Milan winger Cerci bundled the ball home after a save from Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Genoa will be aiming for a better performance next Sunday when they welcome Udinese to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, while Milan travel to Naples a week Monday to face a Napoli side wounded by their recent loss to Juventus.
