Genoa coach Gian Piero Gasperini has defended the decision to sell former star player, Diego Perotti, to Roma during the transfer window.

The Grifone are currently in a relegation scrap and fans were displeased when on deadline day the club sold it’s best player.

“We have many players who can play in the attack like [Diego] Capel and [Darko] Lazovic.” said Gasperini in his pre-match press conference.

“If required, even [Diego] Laxalt can play there. We have to find some attacking fluency. Having a successful attack is not all about individual ability, it’s also about connections and understanding.

“We have to find this understanding quickly so we can score more, we’ve had it before and we hope to have it again. Playing at home will help us, in our last two games we were unable to score, but we were playing Fiorentina and Juventus.

“Against the Viola we came close to scoring.”

Gasperini also reiterated that the decision to sell Perotti was because the club needed to sell the Argentine. “If the president wanted to sell Perotti it is because there was a need to sell the player.

“He would not make such an unpopular decision and create a problem for the team if he didn’t have to. We have to start again.”
