Juventus director Giuseppe Marotta has weighed into the Francesco Totti debate by comparing the Roma icon with Alessandro Del Piero, expressing the importance of club transparency in handling the issue.

A feud between Totti and coach Luciano Spalletti exploded over the weekend following the forward’s comments in an interview which saw him subsequently dropped from Sunday’s match-day squad, and the Bianconeri director believes it is up to the club to manage the situation.

“It is clear that Roma need to handle this awkward situation,” he told Domenica Sportiva.

“I can tell you what happened to us with Del Piero who I think is an icon of football and Juventus.

“When his contract expired, we renewed for a season and the president was explicitly clear; he praised the deeds of a great champion who has contributed to great achievements for our club but also announced that it would be his last year.

“It ended in the best way possible, with the club winning the Scudetto.

“We have always been very clear and explicit as there is nothing above the club.”
