higuainNapoli striker Gonzalo Higuain is aiming to break Gino Rossetti’s Serie A goalscoring record of 36 goals in a single season.

Currently averaging a goal per game for the Partenopei with his 22 goals in as many appearances, El Pipita is on track to break the record that has stood for almost 90 years.

“It will be difficult to score 35 goals in one season,” Higuain said to Serie A TV, “I will try to break it.

“So far, this has been the best season of my career, but it would be perfect if we can win the Scudetto.”

In the same interview, Higuain confessed his affection for the Napoli fans, as well as Naples as a city, comparing it to his native Argentina, while also discussing the iconic Diego Maradona.

“Before I arrived here I could not understand how much he [Maradona] meant to this city,” the 28-year-old said.

“Until recently I had not really explored the city, even though I am always treated with love and respect by the people.

“There is so much here that reminds me of Argentina. In Naples, football is everything. Even the Stadio San Paolo looks a lot like the Monumental [River Plate’s stadium]. Everyone here is crazy about football.

The striker evidently has a good relationship with the club’s supporters, following on from scenes earlier this season that showed Higuain singing popular song ‘Un giorno all’improvviso‘ with the San Paolo’s Curva B after the Partenopei’s defeat of Inter.

“I love the song so much that I learned it off and decided to sing it with the fans,” he added.

“The fans love it too and they deserve our affection for the support they give us.”
