SpallettiRoma coach Luciano Spalletti has said that his team were not capable of scoring in their 2-0 defeat against Real Madrid.

The Giallorossi tactician praised the club’s fans for not whistling and not cheering against their team and he acknowledged that his team needed some luck during the match.

“The Roma public have lived to see great games, great plays, and they know well to choose when to whistle and when to applause,” Spalletti told Mediaset Premium. “If tonight they behaved like so they understood that the squad made an effort and they were unlucky.

Alessandro Florenzi was controversially denied a penalty but Roma were not able to make the most out of their counter-attacks.

“Real Madrid took advantage of an opportunity. It is a problem that we were always retreating back too much,” said Spalletti.

“We should have equalised before the second goal, instead we were not good enough to convert the chances we had.

“We were scared in defence but we were fast on the counter-attack and must exploit this qualify more often.”

Roma will travel away to face Los Merengues in Spain on Tuesday March 8 for the second leg.
