Gianluigi Buffon Juventus Champions League finalItaly captain Gianluigi Buffon is full of praise for departing Azzurri boss Antonio Conte and hopes that the national side can continue to build off his work.

Conte has confirmed his desire to abandon his post after the European Championship and Buffon hopes that the next in line will follow in the footsteps of his predecessor.

“There are many potential replacements for Conte but I have no preferences, the only hope is that we can continue the work we’ve begun with him,” Buffon told Rai Sport.

“He drew a road in blue and we must continue down this path.

“It is a pleasure to train and learn from him.”

The Juventus man then offered his thoughts on the present and future of the national side.

“With a talent pool not quite as deep as it once was, we must continue to work very hard,” the 38-year old said.

“It is clear to see that we make an effort to remain compact and coordinated.

“Lorenzo Insigne has the quality that can take us to the next level but there are many young players here who want to learn and who have the sort of technical ability which we have been lacking in recent times.

“This bodes well for the Azzurri, hopefully it is a sprout that will bear fruit.”
