Genoa won 3-2 against Torino at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris on Sunday afternoon, subsequently moving themselves further away from the Serie A relegation zone.

Ciro Immobile netted a brace earlier on in the match for the Granata, but Alessio Cerci scored two penalties for the Grifone to complete a comeback before half-time, before Luca Rigoni scored the winner in the second half for the home side.

Four minutes had gone when Torino opened the scoring. Immobile let Nikola Maksimovic’s low cross roll through to Andrea Belotti, who laid the ball off into Immobile’s path and the former Sevilla striker smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

After 15 minutes, Immobile scored his second albeit from an offside position when he ran onto Afriyie Acquah’s through-ball and smashed the ball into the top-left corner. Five minutes later, Cerci pulled the score back to 2-1 from the penalty spot after Cristian Ansaldi was fouled by Emiliano Moretti.

Immobile soon wasted an opportunity to make it 3-1 by blasting the ball over the bar and Cerci also squandered a chance to score after a solo run. However, the Genoa winger did score his team’s second penalty of the game in stoppage time after Armando Izzo was fouled by Acquah.

The Grifone took control in the second half and although Cerci had a free-kick saved by Torino goalkeeper Daniele Padelli, Suso then took a free-kick which was headed in by Rigoni in the 65th minute. Suso also had a chance from open play which was saved by Padelli and Goran Pandev shot across goal just minutes later.

Torino went for the equaliser, forcing Genoa goalkeeper Mattia Perin to make saves from Giuseppe Vives and Acquah, while Padelli once again had to save another Suso effort. Sebastien De Maio failed to round off a swift counter-attack after he blasted over the bar.

Genoa are now in 12th place with 34 points in Serie A, whereas Torino are one point behind them in 13th.
