CdDZ2yrW8AAoTHTReal Madrid beat Roma 2-0 at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu to eliminate the Giallorossi 4-0 on aggregate in the round of 16.

The Italians wasted a number of chances to make the contest interesting before Cristiano Ronaldo and James Rodriguez both netted in the second half to kill the tie.

Edin Dzeko wasted a great chance to open the scoring as Mohamed Salah set up the striker who thrashed his shot wide after finding himself in time and space.

Wojciech Szczesny had to make a a good save in the 20th minute as a Luka Modric shot from distance took a deflection which could have wrong footed the goalkeeper who did well to get down and palm it away.

The Italians had another chance as Real Madrid fell asleep while expecting to be awarded with a free kick which allowed Salah to find space on the counterattack but the Egypt international missed the target when he too should have done better.

Ronaldo cut in from the left and fired across goal but Szcesny was again there to save.

Real went close to scoring in the 47th minute as Ronaldo and Marcelo had a series of chances in a goalmouth scramble where Szcesny made an important save amidst a flurry of blocks from his defenders.

Salah had another good chance to score in the 49th minute after a fortuitous bounce but slipped his shot wide of the right post.

Alessandro Florenzi beat a man and fired off a shot from the edge of the area but Keylor Navas saved the low shot which was headed to the far post and Kostas Manolas tested the ‘keeper from the following corner.

The Spanish side ended the tie as a contest in the 63rd minute as substitute Lucas Vazquez dribbled down the right before squaring the ball to Ronaldo who got ahead of Manolas to poke past Szczesny.

Rodriguez made it 2-0 just minutes after when Ronaldo knocked it out wide to the Colombian who fired through the legs of the Giallorossi goalkeeper.

Ronaldo should have scored his second in the 69th minute but the Portugal international dragged the ball wide from an excellent position.

Los Blancos pushed for a third which didn’t come as Roma’s Champions League adventure came to its conclusion in the Spanish capital.
