de canio udineseUdinese coach Luigi De Canio was full of regret after his side’s 3-1 loss against Inter.

Saturday’s match marked the first-ever Serie A encounter that failed to field a single Italian from the opening minute, and the coach was caught by surprise when notified at the conclusion of the match.

“I was not aware of this fact, had I realized this I may have made some changes,” De Canio admitted.

“This is the new reality of global football, everyone now has an equal chance to find work.

“I believe that if Italians are good enough, they will find space to play.”

Despite the loss, Udinese remain a comfortable eight points above the relegation zone but the 58-year-old is not one to rest on his laurels.

“We wanted to demonstrate that we were not merely content with Serie A salvation,” De Canio said.

“We know that we are better than our position in the table suggests and we use this as a source of inspiration.

“However, when you come against a strong team who knows how to punish errors, you can sometimes lose.”
