mattia perinGenoa goalkeeper Mattia Perin’s European Championship dream is over, as the extent of his recent injury is worse than first thought.

The knock occurred in the first half of Saturday’s 1-0 victory against Sassuolo, when the youngster collided with teammate Ezequiel Munoz.

As reported by Sky Sport Italia, Perin ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, and is not expected to return to the pitch before September 2016.

Despite the obvious discomfort, Perin managed to finish the game and made several decisive saves.

The 23-year old Italian keeper was the youngest member of Cesare Prandelli’s 2014 World Cup squad, serving as a backup keeper to both Gianluigi Buffon and Salvatore Sirigu, but the setback will cause the player to miss out on a reprise of the role for this summer’s European Championship in France.

The shot-stopper has been called to the Azzurri 17 times, but has only made one appearance in a 1-0 friendly win over Albania in 2014.
