Nesta - Montreal ImpactFormer AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta is standing by coach Sinisa Mihajlovic as the Rossoneri have failed to win in their last four fixtures.

The 40-year-old is currently working as the coach of NASL side Miami FC and he had feelings of solidarity for his counterpart at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

“Coaches are never 100 per cent to blame for everything,” said Nesta to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I wouldn’t sack Mihajlovic because that would mean starting all over again. It’s clear that there are other problems.”

The man with 78 Italy appearances also discussed the current state of the Azzurri.

“It’s true that the pool of talent is smaller now and there is a lot of discussion about the inefficiency of the academies,” Nesta went on.

“I think it’s just a generational matter, clubs closing doors to youngsters is just an excuse. If a player is good enough then he will find his place.

“[Marco] Verratti is an example, he would have been a starter in Italy if someone had enough money to keep him.”

The former defender made 224 appearances for Milan where he won Serie A twice, the Champions League twice and the Coppa Italia once.
