El Shaarawy Roma GenoaGenoa were pipped at the finish line by Roma in a 3-2 defeat at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in their Monday evening Serie A meeting.

Panagiotis Tachtsidis and Leonardo Pavoletti netted but Mohamed Salah, Francesco Totti and Stephan El Shaarawy earned the win.

The match started at a high tempo, defender Antonio Rudiger stopping the darting run of Diego Laxalt, and then Kostas Manolas was called on to deny Leonardo Pavoletti a strike on goal.

Former Genoa man Stephan El Shaarawy then came a whisker wide with an excellent curling effort from outside the box. Moments later the Giallorossi had the lead, a quick exchange of passes between Mohamed Salah and Diego Perotti put the Egyptian through who finished coolly into the bottom corner.

The lead was short-lived. Laxalt made a darting run forward and found Panagiotis Tachtsidis virtually unmarked, the former Roma midfielder hitting the ball first time into the far corner. El Shaarawy then had further opportunities in front of goal, goalkeeper Eugenio Lamanna forced into making a great stop to palm the ball out of play.

Suso then brought a similarly great save out of Wojciech Szczesny, who needed to leap and tap the ball over the bar when the Spaniard struck from outside the box.

Having withstood a barrage of Roma attacks, the Grifone took the lead. Tomas Rincon eating up the ground to play the ball in to Pavoletti, who thumped it past Szczesny.

However, the home side hadn’t accounted for the inspirational Roma captain Francesco Totti. A clever lay-off from a free kick allowed Totti to power it beyond the wall and beyond Lamanna to level the score.

Minutes from full time Roma won it, substitute Edin Dzeko feeding El Shaarawy in the box, who powered it into the back of the net.
