Empoli 2-1 at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

The Nerazzurri scored twice in the first half and saw out the game after the break without adding to their tally, although the former Manchester City tactician admitted he was forced into making more changes than he would have liked.

“Matches can sometimes get complicated,” he explained to Sky Sport Italia after the win. “For example [Mauro] Icardi was hurt immediately after we had taken of [Stevan] Jovetic so we lost something going forward, but it was a game we should have closed out in the first half.”

He went on to praise his players for their improvement during the course of a season, one that has seen the Nerazzurri return to European competition, clinching a Europa League spot with Saturday’s win.

“Everyone has improved,” he claimed, “Not just Icardi. I think [Geoffrey] Kondogbia, [Ivan] Perisic and Jovetic and [Jeison] Murillo who did very well in the first half of the season.

“As players have their first experience of Italy, they need to improve, and then do more next year.”
