Hellas Verona 3-1 at the Stadio Renzo Barbera on Sunday night, securing their Serie A survival in the final round of the 2015-16 season.

Franco Vazquez opened the scoring for the Sicilians while Rosanero wing-back Michel Morganella and Gialloblu winger Pawel Wszolek received red cards for an incident in the first half. Federico Viviani equalised but Enzo Maresca and Alberto Gilardino’s goals gave Palermo victory while Eros Pisano also netted a consolation goal.

The first half was rather scrappy as both teams struggled to get the ball out of midfield and hardly any clear chances were created before Vazquez broke the deadlock in the 28th minute as he struck an angled drive from the edge of the penalty area after Oscar Hiljemark laid the ball off.

Hellas Verona hit the post twice, with Giampaolo Pazzini lobbing the ball from about 30 metres but Stefano Sorrentino touched it onto the woodwork, and Artur Ionita hit the same post after running onto a through-ball. In between those chances, Morganella was sent-off for elbowing Wszolek but the Pole was surprisingly sent-off for trying to shrug him off.

Despite both sides going down to 10 men, they scored early in the second half. Romulo was surrounded by defenders but he passed to Viviani, who ran into space and struck a low angled drive into the bottom left corner after 49 minutes. Maresca gave Palermo the lead two minutes later with a looping after Andrea Rispoli’s long throw took a bounce in the box.

Gilardino made it 3-1 after 64 minutes with a textbook header although Rispoli was in an offside position when he crossed from the right-wing. A free-kick from the left went into the path of Pisano, who kicked the ball into the net at the far post in the 84th minute.
