pirlo italyNew York City FC midfielder Andrea Pirlo has recognised that his move to the MLS has hindered his chances of obtaining a call up to the Italian national team, although he does remain hopeful ahead of the European Championships this summer.

Since making his debut in 2002, Pirlo has featured 116 times for the Azzurri, and despite his desire to make this forthcoming tournament his final one, he now has genuine concerns about whether Antonio Conte will select him.

“It’s possible that I won’t be selected for the Italian squad,” Pirlo told La Gazzetta dello Sport shortly after speaking with Italian coach Antonio Conte on phone. “Conte hasn’t given his definitive list yet.

“Sebastian Giovinco [who plays for Tornto FC] and I spoke with Conte, and he assured us that nothing is definitive yet.

“Still, when someone decides to come and play in the United States, they have to know what they are getting into.

“These were issues I reflected on prior to joining NYCFC, and I knew the risks.

“Even if you go and play in Belgium, or another league that is thought of as having lesser quality, you still have the chance of playing in the Champions League or the Europa League, but that isn’t possible here, and that makes a big difference.

“While the MLS doesn’t have the same reputation as the European leagues, evaluations are still being made and I’ll be ready if called.

Despite his desire to continue playing for the Azzurri, Pirlo has insisted that he isn’t disappointed with his decision, and does not regret departing Europe.

“I don’t have any regrets, it’s been a real pleasure to come and play here,” he added.  “I have exceptional teammates, and I enjoy helping them to grow as players.”

Conte will name his provisional squad on Monday.
