Serie A 2015-16: Team Of The Week – Round 37

As Frosinone have been officially doomed to Serie B and Palermo pulled themselves out of the drop zone, Round 37 saw Napoli retain second place and Sassuolo sixth.

The Neroverdi beat the Ciociari, whose fairy tale stint in the top flight now draws to a close, while the Rosanero drew 0-0 with Fiorentina and made the most of Carpi‘s loss to Lazio. At the top, Juventus incredibly saw their 26-match unbeaten run halted by bottom-feeders Hellas Verona in Luca Toni’s final game, and both Napoli and Roma won behind the Bianconeri, the Giallorossi defeating Chievo.

In the Derby della Lanterna it was all about Genoa and Suso, who gave the Rossoblu an impressive victory over Sampdoria thanks to the midfielder’s brace.

AC Milan scraped past Bologna to maintain hope for finishing in the sixth spot, while Inter edged out Empoli. Atalanta emerged victorious over Udinese in an utterly meaningless mid-table fixture.

Our Team of the Week will see a 3-4-3 formation deployed.

Federico Marchetti – Lazio

Marchetti saved not one, but two penalties from Jerry Mbakogu, making eight saves in total. The performance will definitely endear the Euro 2016 hopeful to Claudio Lotito, as the president was highly critical of Carpi’s presence in Serie A. As it stands, his heroics may send the Biancorossi to Serie B.

Bruno Peres – Torino (3 Team of the Week appearances)

An absolute beast down the left, which is not even his natural side. He caused Fernando Hysaj fits and found a lucky, yet beautiful goal as well.

Filip Helander – Verona

His battle with Juventus’ Simone Zaza was a constant throughout the game; a battle he won with intelligence, limiting a normally unstoppable Bianconeri attack.

totw week 37Kalidou Koulibaly – Napoli (6 apps)

Great on the ball and simply superior every time the game got physical. Easily won his individual duel with Andrea Belotti.

Ivan Perisic – Inter (5 apps)

Once again he is the decisive factor for the Nerazzurri, with both goals against Empoli coming from his feet: he assisted Mauro Icardi, then scored the second.

Allan – Napoli (4 apps)

Absolutely dominated the midfield, deleting the Torino centre-midfielders from the pitch and became an additional defender to help out Raul Albiol and Kalidou Koulibaly when needed.

Radja Nainggolan – Roma (7 apps)

“He has perfect timing in his runs and has a great shot,” said his coach, Luciano Spalletti after the match. As usual, the Belgian also made a difference defensively. A real complete modern midfielder.

Suso – Genoa

The Spaniard has become the new idol in Genoa, encapsulating a strong six months with the Rossoblu with the most important thing an attacking player can do: score (twice) in the derby against Sampdoria. The goals were beauties, too.

Leonardo Pavoletti – Genoa (2 apps)

It may be too late to see him feature at the European Championship, but at the moment he is arguably the most in-form Italian centre-forward. Against Sampdoria he helped the team, created space for his teammates and scored the opener.

Luca Toni – Hellas Verona (2 apps)

The story comes to an end, and a fitting end it was. Toni is loved by everyone and Calcio will miss him. To say goodbye, he helped Hellas beat the great Juventus, chipping home the penalty.

Gonzalo Higuain – Napoli (17 apps)

A customary goal, taking his tally to 33 and taking Napoli back into second place. He also hit the post and consistently caused nightmares for Torino’s defence. The Argentine hitman needs only one goal in his final match to tie Gunnar Nordhal’s all-time goalscoring record.
