As the goal went in via a deflection, you could almost hear the groans of Roma fans as the man the club sold for barely more than a million euros rose to prominence.

An intelligent midfielder, the 19-year-old made his Serie A debut for Roma in March of last year, replacing Salih Ucan against Cesena.

His 23 minutes that day were all he would see for the Giallorossi, but Sassuolo have been much kinder to his development.

He slots in perfectly amongst a squad brimming with young talent – the likes of Domenico Berardi, Alfred Duncan and Gregoire Defrel a significant influence on his training.

Now, he is able enough to go it alone and bring home the points for his side.

His goal mattered big time for the Neroverdi – the strike lifting the club into an incredible sixth place in the Serie A table.

Should they remain in this berth, then Pellegrini will have the chance of playing Europa League football next season.

Despite his advances coming in leaps and bounds this term, one of Pellegrini’s most relieving moments might actually be seeing Eusebio Di Francesco extend his contract as Sassuolo coach.

The Italian coach snubbed his country as well as reported interest from AC Milan and Fiorentina, clearly committed to the course in Emilia-Romagna.

Pellegrini embodies everything that Di Francesco aspires to do as a coach, expressing himself whilst still maintaining that tactical discipline to the team, and could break into the Italy Under-21 set-up soon.
