Newly promoted Premier League side Middlesbrough have completed the capture of Atalanta midfielder Marten de Roon for a fee believed to be in the region of €15 million.

De Roon, who only moved to the Bergamaschi last summer from Eredivisie outfit Heerenveen, fast became a fan-favourite at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia in his one season with La Dea.

“Atalanta announce that we have sold outright Marten de Roon to Middlesbrough,” the Bergamo-based club confirmed in a statement on their official website.

“The whole club would like to wish the very best of luck to Marten.

“Despite having worn our shirt for just one year, he won the hearts of all of our supporters not only with his professionalism and dedication, but for his fairness and openness demonstrated outside of the camp.”

In his 36 Serie A appearances last season, the combative midfielder found himself on the scoresheet just once, while contributing a further two assists.
