AC Milan coach Vincenzo Montella is determined to start from the bottom and work his way up so his new squad finds success.

The Rossoneri have had a disappointing few seasons in Serie A and have been absent from European competition for a few seasons too, but with a new coach and president Silvio Berlusconi soon to say goodbye, Montella believes the time is right for the club to start again.

“I don’t know whether it’s right to say it is year zero, in the end they are just words, but the truth is that we must build,” the 42-year-old told Sky Sport Italia.

Although only a pre-season friendly, the new regime under the former Fiorentina and Sampdoria spearhead got off to a good start with a 2-1 victory over Bordeaux, with young Suso grabbing both the Diavolo’s goals.

“There is a lot of work to do, but I am very happy with this first period, you can see that the squad has desire for revenge after a time in which things did not go very well,” Montella said.

Recent performances from the Italian giants have unsurprisingly gone down badly with the Milan faithful, however Montella is positive that new management and a restart will help the club find support again.

“Milan fans are accustomed to not only winning, which is already a difficult thing, but repeatedly winning,” he said.

“We are not currently adored by the fans, but the opposite, and it is up to us to return and make them fall in love with our performance.”

The new system under Montella will be tested towards the end of July and early August, when the Serie A side face Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Chelsea in the International Champions Cup.
