Manchester City FC v Juventus - UEFA Champions LeagueUEFA have agreed to change the Champions League qualification system in order to allay fears of a breakaway super league led by the European Club Association.

The top four European leagues will see four of their teams automatically qualify for the competition as the tournament’s rules change for the period between 2018 and 2021.

UEFA confirmed on their official website that historical success will now also be taken into account for coefficient calculations and that a new company will be formed to manage the future of continental competition.

In essence, the rule change will see Serie A gain two extra places considering that only one of the last six teams who competed in the playoff stage has actually managed to qualify to the group stage.

AC Milan director Umberto Gandini was key along with Bayern Munich’s Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in representing the interests of the elite European clubs.
