Carlo TavecchioFIGC president Carlo Tavecchio has revealed that Serie A could be reduced from 20 teams to 18 in the near future in a bid to be more competitive.

Juventus are the current Scudetto holders and are chasing their sixth-straight Serie A title this season, and Tavecchio wants to create a bigger fan base and increase the skill level seen in the league by making it smaller.

Speaking to Rai Radio, the 73-year-old admitted the financial costs of a change to the league would make it impossible to implement immediately, but he is looking to discuss a three or four year plan with teams within the next week.

Tavecchio would also decrease the number of teams competing in Serie B and Italy’s third division.

It was only recently that Serie A was expanded to 20 teams, with 18 competing between 1988 and 2004, and since it’s expansion only three teams have ever won the Scudetto.

Inter claimed the first five titles, with AC Milan winning in 2010/11 before the Juventus domination began.
