After seeing a move for Portugal international Rui Patricio come to nothing, Napoli are set to step up their search for a new goalkeeper by turning to Arsenal star Petr Cech.

With Pepe Reina set to join AC Milan on a free transfer, the Partenopei are in need of reinforcements, with coach Carlo Ancelotti keen on Paris Saint-Germain’s Alphonse Areola and Bernd Leno of Bayer Leverkusen.

However, Leno is thought to be close to completing a switch to Arsenal, though Napoli’s failure to land their original target has opened the door to the possibility of a move for Cech, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Napoli will look to take advantage of the Czech international’s reduced role in Arsenal’s first team to approach the Premier League club with a loan offer, which would see Cech see out the final year of his Gunners contract in Serie A.

Ancelotti has previously worked with the 36-year-old during the pair’s respective spells at Chelsea and the Italian tactician sees the former Rennes custodian as an experienced and viable short term option.

With Cech’s contract expiring, Napoli would push to only cover his wages rather than pay a fee to secure the deal.
