Catania and Cagliari were involved in a 0-0 draw at the Stadio Angelo Massimino on Sunday afternoon.

The best chances of the game fell in the path of Matias Cabrera of Cagliari, as he missed two golden opportunities to give the Isolani the lead. Radja Nainggolan’s heavily deflected shot in the second half gave fans a moment of scare in a game of few great chances, as a point a piece was the end result in a game that lacked goals.

The first shot in the game was registered by Gonzalo Bergessio, who blazed it over after being fouled near to the edge of the box.

Shortly after, Cagliari broke forward as Marco Sau leapt forward with the ball. A penalty appeal was turned down for Cagliari, who continued play, for Radja Nainggolan to blast an optimistic shot over the bar.

The Rossoblu were presented with a golden chance to take the lead when Daniele Conti hit an early cross into Marco Sau’s path, but the Italian narrowly missed the ball as he came sliding in.

Halfway through the half, Gonzalo Bergessio’s header from close range was saved by Michael Agazzi.

Cagliari were soon forced to make an early change as Francesco Pisano was stretchered off with an season-ending injury to his knee, and Matias Cabrera replaced him.

The chance of the half fell to substitute Matias Cabrera. Victor Ibarbo pulled it back to the defender inside the box, who blasted over in a wasted chance for the Sardinians.

Catania’s Izco drilled his volley from outside the box wide shortly after a corner conceded by Davide Astori, in a half that the goalless scoreline was hardly threatened.

The second half began in a lively fashion. It didn’t take long when Radja Nainggolan’s heavily deflected shot caused a scary moment for goalkeeper Mariano Andujar as he scrambled across the goal. Fortunately for him, the shot twisted wide.

A free kick conceded by Matias Cabrera for a bad foul which was deemed worthy of a yellow card on Alejandro Gómez gave the Rossazzurri an opportunity, but the free kick taken by Giuseppe Bellusci was blocked by the wall.

Cagliari broke quickly, and it was again substitute Matias Cabrera that missed a costly chance for the Sardinians. The ball from Mauricio Pinilla fell perfectly to Matias Cabrera, whose right footed shot agonizingly went over the bar.

Late on, Cagliari came close to breaking the deadlock when the team broke forward. Mauricio Pinilla took on his man and then took a shot from the inside of the box, but his shot did not end up troubling goalkeeper Mariano Andujar, who watched the ball roll wide for another shot off target.

Another chance went begging for Catania in a dangerous position when a free kick taken from close range was blocked by Cagliari’s line of defence.

But it was Giovanni Marchese in stoppage time that effectively saved the game for Catania when Thiago Ribeiro was through on goal after taking on the keeper, but the heroic defending of Giovanni Marchese gave both sides a point each.
