Livorno fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to Fiorentina in Serie A on Sunday afternoon, a result that sends them straight back to Serie B.

Juan Cuadrado’s second half goal condemns the Amaranto to an immediate return to the second tier having won promotion last summer.

The Viola started lively, Alberto Aquilani showing an outstanding first touch before unleashing a shot at goal but the former Roma man skewed his shot off target.

It was a half of very little incident in fact, being summed up by ridiculous efforts from Jonny Mosquera from range and Josip Ilicic of Fiorentina.

There were brief moments of inspiration but those were few and far between but Ishak Belfodil almost gave the Amaranto the lead when he rose to head at goal and sent it sneaking wide.

Another header, this time from Djamel Mesbah, did call Antonio Rosati (deputising for the injured Norberto Neto) into action and he saved well from that effort.

That was about that in terms of first half opportunity and incident but there did arrive a moment of class in the second half and with Giuseppe Rossi on the field, the Azzurri striker teed up Cuadrado to open the scoring at the second attempt.

The former Villarreal man certainly seems to be doing everything he can to convince Cesare Prandelli that he is over his injury woes and worthy of a place in this summer’s World Cup squad.

That effectively saw Livorno shoulders slump, with Fiorentina happy to try and see the game out, and although they had brief hope when a free kick from Emerson was saved by Rosati.

Miguel Borja’s late red card simply added insult to the injury for Livorno who are set to finish the season bottom of the pile.
