Bottom side Cesena took on Fiorentina at the Stadio Manuzzi in Serie A on Sunday afternoon and managed to secure a goalless draw in a game that saw Adrian Mutu sent off.

Sinisa Mihajlovic had a number of players out including Alberto Gilardino and Per Koldrup, while Juan Manuel Vargas was dropped due to supposed lack of professionalism.

The Seahorses on the other hand had former Viola striker Mutu in their ranks and with pressure mounting on boss Marco Giampaolo getting more points on the board was vital.

Cesena: Antonioli; Ceccarelli (Ricci 91), Von Bergen, Rodirguez, Lauro; Parolo, Guana, Candreva; Ghezzal (Livaja 85), Eder, Mutu

Fiorentina: Boruc; Cassani, Gamberini, Natali, Pasqual; Montolivo (Ljajic 76), Behrami, Lazzari (Munari 65); Cerci, Silva, Jovetic

Visitors Fiorentina were in the ascendency during the opening stages and should have taken the lead in the 17th minute when Cesare Natali knocked down a corner for Alessandro Gamberini, but the central defender could only knock the ball over.

Cesena, not to be outdone, rattled the crossbar from a thunderous Roberto Guana drive. This came before a Luca Cecerelli shot which force Artur Boruc into a fine save.

Then came a penalty appeal from the home side after the ball struck Natali on his outstretched arm, but the referee gave nothing.

After the break Cesena hit the woodwork once more, this time it was Antonio Candreva was the instigator for the Seahorses.

Stevan Jovetic and Santiago Silva combined well to create a couple of opportunities for La Viola but they had to deal with an in form 42-year-old goalkeeper in Francesco Antonioli.

But the real flash point of the game came just after the 70th minute when Mutu was given his marching orders.

The Romanian swung out an arm and caught Mattia Cassani in the face, though the defender was pulling the Cesena player back. Nonetheless it was a stupid move from Mutu who was beginning to exert his influence on the game.

The game fizzled out a little with both teams having few chances in the final fifteen minutes.
