Avellino drew Ternana 2-2 on Monday night as the sides wrapped up the seventh week of Serie B play at the Stadio Libero Liberati.

Felipe Avenatti and Nicolas Viola scored for the Rossoverdi while Serie B’s leading scorer, Luigi Gastaldo, netted a brace for the visiting Avellino side who had a chance to draw level with Perugia atop the Serie B standings with a win.

The Lupi started out on the front foot controlling much of the play but were unable to mount a scoring chance until just inside the 20 minute mark when midfielder Eros Schiavon ripped a shot just outside the Ternana goal.

The hosts settled down and began asserting themselves a half hour in as they had three separate chances before the breakthrough came right at the death of the first half.

Ternana’s Luigi Vitale thwarted a counterattack, tore down the left flank and fed Luca Crecco whose low cross found Avenatti and the striker’s left-footed missile ripped past Lupi keeper Alfred Gomis to put the hosts up heading into the locker room.

Avellino immediately replied minutes into the second half on a spectacular finish as Gastaldo controlled the ball expertly off his chest and his bicycle-kick finish settled into the corner of the net.

Minutes later Gastaldo fell in the area under a heavy challenge by Biagio Meccariello, but a penalty was not awarded.

The hosts then took the lead 20 minutes after the break on Viola’s unstoppable free kick, drilled into the upper right corner of Gomis’ net from 20 meters out.

Karma then rewarded the Biancoverdi their penalty kick shortly after the hour mark and, once again, Meccariello was at the heart of the decision.

The Ternana defender was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area from Schiavon’s pass and, Serie B’s leading scorer Gastaldo scored to give him his sixth goal of the campaign.

Both sides traded excellent scoring chances but none more wasteful then Ternana’s Mirko Eramo who hit a weak right-footed shot right at Gomis when it appeared he had the net all to himself with just minutes left in the match.
