Del Neri and where it went wrong at Juventus

Thank You For Everything Gigi ! You will be missed !

Where didn’t it go wrong at Juventus would be a better title for the piece, right?

Make no mistakes, I would never would have guessed that Luigi Delneri – the man who worked wonders with a mediocre Sampdoria team – wouldn’t succeed at Juventus. Don’t be fooled by Juventini telling you they knew Delneri was not going to succeed.  No no, that’s something they wish they knew since last summer.

I have come to conclusion that we Juventini, delude ourselves easily whenever new faces come to our rescue, such as the case with Delneri and Marotta. However this is a result of the last two years, and when yet another disappointing season is over, the decision making process at Juve isn’t working quite so well.

Whoever is making decisions for the Bianconeri’s future must stop playing God and come to realize that – THIS IS JUVENTUS!

Before we laugh Delneri off the stage, we really need to judge the situation on its own merits. The boss did try various tactical approaches with his team and screamed players names out non-stop to motivate them during matches, but that wasn’t enough. He did keep the squad together (as players confessed) but that as well, did not help better the results.

Last but not least – he rejuvenated the “weak” Felipe Melo of last year, but then again – not any better for the majority of the season. Thus at least, you can’t blame a man for trying. It’d be a matter of opinion if we blame only Delneri, Marotta or both of them, but then in this topic the President Andrea Agnelli also has to take his share of blame – for hiring both of them.

Wasn’t Delneri talking of a Juve with no limits? Or was that just another flight of fancy? Indeed, it was. In fact this at least shows our expectations at the beginning of the season, when Juve were scoring the most goals in Serie A and the those that conceded were just a matter to be solved with time. Everything went wrong after Quagliarella’s injury and its still unbelievable that his impact on Juve was so crucial, when every one of us didn’t even notice the effect he was having.

Additionally, with Alessandro Matri in the team, we cant deny our hopes increased but we should not excuse another monumental failure with injuries the way that Delneri has done.

The team had a greater failure this season. Mentality – the team miserably failed in all aspects of it. Though Delneri and his players claim they have been united the entire season, we can hardly agree with that. The team lacked their own identity and often were not able to preserve what they already earned. Apart from beating most of their toughest rivals, the Juventus of 2010/2011 will be remembered for failure and the records our worshiped Capitano broke, but else positive.

Come the summer, Andrea Agnelli and Giuseppe Marotta will have to work around the clock, and against it, to rejuvenate the Juventus that Luigi Delneri left high and dry. If it is Antonio Conte or anybody else who steps into the boss’ shoes, he must have the guts to protect Juve’s image, its pride and most importantly this unnamed man must know that at Juventus winning is not important, but its the only thing that matters.
