Giancarlo Abete, President of the FIGC, the Italian football federation, has said that the first round of Serie A fixtures will almost definitely not go ahead.

“An announcement that we will not play the 1st round of the season is imminent,” he stated.

“I have taken a couple of hours to contact the President of the Italian players Damiano Tommasi and the president of the Lega Serie A Maurizio Beretta again.

“At midday there will be a statement.”

The disagreement between the AIC, the players’ union led by ex-Roma player Tommasi, and the Lega, the name for a union of Serie A clubs, stems from a collective bargaining contract that the Lega is refusing to sign.

The AIC wants the Lega to contribute towards payment of solidarity fees to unemployed players, while the Lega maintains that the players should pay all of it.
