Inter Milan’s legendary skipper has revealed that he turned down the chance to play for either Barcelona or Real Madrid earlier in his career.

Javier Zanetti, who has made an incredible 753 appearance for the Nerazzurri since 1995, has been the captain of the club for 12 years, since taking over the armband back in 1999.

And he certainly feels that his persistence and loyalty was paid off, with the Nerazzurri’s treble winning season in 2010.

“I was close to joining Barcelona and Real Madrid, but I am happy to have remained at Inter because I knew that sooner or later our moment to shine would arrive, and it did,” Zanetti affirmed to Sky Sport Italia.

“I arrived at Inter when I was very young and I had the chance to play with Giuseppe Bergomi, and I met Giacinto Facchetti too.”

Throughout his time, the evergreen Argentine has won five Serie A titles, four Coppa Italia crowns, and of course the Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup crowns from that incredible season in 2010.
