Inter’s captain Javier Zanetti is confident that his side can reclaim the Scudetto this season in addition to pushing for Champions League glory.
Last season was not a memorable one for the Nerazzurri who suffered a horrid start which proved costly in the race for the title. They were also dumped out of the Champions League by Schalke in the quarter finals.
Treble winners in 2010 when Jose Mourinho guided the Beneamata to domestic and European success, the past year has been one of decline and instability with former coaches Rafa Benitez and Leonardo both having been ousted after short spells.
The ship seems to have steadied with the appointment of Gian Piero Gasperini over the summer. The former Genoa boss has been afforded a few new players in Ricky Alvarez, Mauro Zarate and Diego Forlan. Wesley Sneijder has stayed on despite being linked with a move to Manchester.
One player the club was unable to hold on to was Samuel Eto’o who defected to Russia. Nevertheless, captain Zanetti retains belief in his side for the season.
Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the veteran said, “We’ve won a lot these last years and we remain a group that can aim to win everything.
“None of us think we’re not favourites. We know how much we want it and all we need is to stay injury-free.”
With Serie A finally set to commence following a player’s strike that saw round one postponed, Inter’s first assignment will be a tricky encounter in Sicily against Palermo.
