After months of speculation and rumour Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi has given the clearest indication yet that he wishes to stay with the club.

The 28 year-old vice-captain said he is waiting to inherit the captain’s armband at the club, currently held by Roma legend Francesco Totti,  which gives hope to his supporters that his ten year tenure with the club will not be coming to an end any time soon.

De Rossi’s contract expires in the summer of 2012 and he is free to talk with other clubs in January with a view to leaving the club he has supported all his life on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Talks with Roma officials have been ongoing for many months and the apparent failure to reach an agreement has alerted a host of top European side, with Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini being the most vocal in his wish to bring the talented midfielder to the Etihad Stadium.

De Rossi has now said he would be ready to step into Totti’s shoes in future and become the new captain.

“Future captain? I cannot see myself being labelled this, but there is an precise explanation – once the current captain stops playing then I will take the armband,” De Rossi told Radio 2 Rai.

“Do I need to reassure fans over my future? Well, the heart is there for it to beat fast.”

There you have it then folks.  De Rossi to become the new Roma captain once Er Pupone hangs up his boots and a new contract to be signed very shortly… If only life were that simple!!
